Answer / n.parthasarathy
as for field winding we give DC supply And for the motor
supply we give AC supply and giving AC suppy to rotor is
difficult so we give field winding in the rotor

In the case of a synchronous machine, large a.c currents
are to be taken from the armature windings, so the armature
is the stator. It is better to make the armature the
stator, if large currents are to be taken from it.

The arrangement of rotor winding and stator winding is
according to rated output of alternator, insulation
consideration of stator and rotor. since for a low voltage
alternator ,rotor (field) is stationary and armature
(stator) rotates. But as output voltage (terminal) increase
accordingly MW POWER,THE SIZE OF ALTERNATOR INCREASE,SO
armature ,which is the single heaviest part of alternator
is made stator ,due to mecanical stress ,insulation problem
cosiderations.but on the counter part rotor is light in
weight as compared to stator. The output can be easily taken
out by stationary armature.

if field winding is mounted on the stator then 4 slip rings
are required, hence bulkness and cost will increased and due
to large current flow more insulators are required(for
avoid heating) as well as rotor inertia is also
effected...while if we placed field winding on rotor then
only 2 slip rings are required hence the problems due to
opposite winding can be avoided.

Answer / ankitshah
actually the rotor has very less current flowing throuth it
and for designing synchrounous of large capacity there
would be excessive heating at brush contact which puts a
limitation on it, at the same time field winding is given
dc current which is less compared to armature current. Also
by putting armature on stator higher voltage can be
generated.

Field winding is less weight compared to armature winding.
So it is easy to rotate, hence it is placed in the rotor.
So for Synchronous machines we use revolving field.

Actually 1) Armature winding have greater current than field winding. For large current in armature the greater amount of magnetic material required to produce linear magnetic curve. But rotor have lesser material than stator.
2) The heating loss on slip rings and brush contact will be increase if armature winging is om rotor.
Thank you.

More slip rings and brushes are required if we place field winding on rotor. Cu losses increase due to increase in armature current so hydrogen cooling is provided and it is difficult to provide H2 cooling on rotor

Answer / nakshatra jha
it is economical to have armature winding on stator and field winding on rotor and only two slip ring are required in synchronous machine so reduced the slip ring the machine become more efficient, that reason we provide armature winding on stator and field winding on rotor.
