what will happen if the secondary of current transformer

what will happen if the secondary of current transformer kept open......

Answer / octav

If CT secondary is open then secondary current I2 will be
0, and that lead to I1N1 transforming in heat, and this can
damage the CT; depending on CT range this can be just a
insulation resistance damage or a CT explosion.

Answer / gowtham

hi raju, great day,

your answer is quite interesting....this is wat am
expecting...but the strange thing is i hav tested a CT in a
open condition (sec) which doesnt given any drastic outputs
lik heating or burning. my CT is 100/5 A in this i hav
given more than 120 A.. do you hav any datasheet for CT.

what will happen if the secondary of current transformer kept open......

Answer / gatzrulz

dear max,
i have practically tested the CT with various values of
inputs. but i have n't get any high value of voltage.

Dear Naren,
what you said is wrong. we do have CT's with higher primary
turns and lesser sec turns. Since im in the industrial
field am just telling this.

what will happen if the secondary of current transformer kept open......

Answer / r. k.d

Whatever Rajkumar said is totally correct. I like to add
few points in it. when CT is open from secondary side than
it can be assumed that CT secondary resistance is infinite.
Hence, CT will try to increase mag. flex in the core and
when it will cross its rated burden it will get heated and
may explode.
Please remeber that CT will not blow if passes low current.
CT will blow in high current passed for long time only.
that s why CT get blast when short circuit current flows
from the CT.
As open secondary offers high resistance, so it will
produce high voltage accross it.
Hope its clrear.

FRNDS,
ANSWER 1. INRUSH CURRENT IS NOTHING BUT THE CURRENT
PRODUCED DUE TO THE INDUCED EMF IN THE SEC WINDING. FOR
EXAMPLE IF AT ALL IM USING A 100/5 CT IT IS OBVIOUS THAT
THE INRUSH CURRENT WILL BE VERY LOW COMPARE TO PRIMARY...

ANSWER 2. FRND I KNOW THAT SAFETY ISSUE WILL COME...WHAT IS
IT.THATS MY QUESTION...

Answer / manfred

The C.T will explode due to the Inrush Current flowing
through the secondary Windings of the C.T
