What happens if you give supply to the rotor of three phase
induction motor?

well this question seems to be incomplete...is rotor is
given the supply alongwith the stator then the machine will
become doubly excited and will atart to behave as
synchronous motor provided the two fields are inter locked.
however if rotor is given supply and the stator is short
ckted then the rotor will move in the direction opposite to
that of rotating magnetic field.

Didn't mention what kind of motor.
In the case of Squirrel Cage induction motor, it is
impossible to give supply to rotor as there is no winding
on it except shorted copper/aluminium bars.

Once I tried on a 2.7 HP three phase slip ring induction motor. What happened was smoke came from rotor and rotor winding was gone.

there are two types of IM one is squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors. In squirrel cage rotor windings are short circuited with end rings where we cant give supply therefore this type of motor has more efficiency because losses due to slip rings and brush assembly is less...but in case of slip ring IM in order to increase torque, resistance is added through slip ring assembly
we can give 3 phase supply to rotor and they are callled as rotor fed IM

It is quite difficult to provide three phase supply to a
rotating object like rotor. As you know in case of squirel
cage motor the rotor is shorted through end rings so
breaker will trip once you give supply to shorted motor. In
case you open circuit the rotor winding and then you give
three phase supply but you have check the phase squence of
stator and rotor to make the stator magnetic field follow
the rotor magnetic field.Initially the motor will start
with very high torque but afterwards it will become very
messy to calculate the load current, voltage etc due to the
effects of faraday and lenz law and the behavior becomes
unpredictable. I will sugest not to make such
experiment.Any way the three phase slip ring is mostly
unavailable to make this experiment.

the suipply given to the rotor is difficult.need slipring
to given supply to rotating component.so normally supply
given to stator

will act like a transformer ....
if u keep on increasing the rotor current beyond a value it
will burn !!!

why a single phase motor of same rating takes more amps than the three phase motor? as single phase motor at 230v takes 5amp per HP while 3 p motor takes 2.5amp per hp at 230v.

i am swathi, b.tech 4th year. In smps(switched mode power supply)we are using diodes, mosfets, igbts for controling of current. And my question is why we did not use thyristors(scr)? it is also act as a switch, then what is the drawback of scr as compared to above transisters> if we use the scr, then what is happening ? plz give reply as soon as possible bcoz i am doing project on smps. plz frnds i want ans for that. if anybody know the ans plz send to my e-mail id /swathi.tadakapally@gmail.com/
