can we load Power capicitors on DG sets?

No we need not connect the Capacitor to the DG as the DG
will have the AVR by which the constant voltage is
maintained even in case the load increase or decrease. When
the capacitors are connected they act as a load on the
sytem there by increasing the system load rather than
helping us.

Capacitor requirement arises to effective utilization of
the generated power (to reduce the losses mainly-cu losses
& line losses) & all switchgear component. In general
practice Capacitors are not connected on DG Set.As per my
understanding following are the main reasons for which it
is not recommendation to run capacitors on DG set :
1. During no load condition capacitor will try to increase
the voltage level of genrated voltage which can damage the
insulation of wdg & wdg may get burnt
2. With increase in PF we will not ge much advantage as the
cable losses are negligle.Load is in nearest proximity of
the Equipment.
3. Capacitors can be installed at load side

Yes, self working on DG for last 20 years and never had any
problem because of capacitors. Capacitors will help to
improve the power factor of the system and indirectly
reduce the load on alternator (which is mainly for
delivering the reactive power). only care shall be taken by
not allowing the power factor to go in leading. It is a
normal practise to switch on the capacitors after motor
starts and switch off immediately after motor trips.
Instead of maintaining the PF close to unity, it is better
to maintain it 0.9.

A DG is used to supply power when there is power failure
and not for power factor correction but a Power Capacitor
is mainly used for power factor correction and is usually
kept near unity to avoid penality.

Not at all ,Since DG sets are already generating the rated
voltage required and the designed power factor. For the
sake of discussion if we agree to install the capacitor on
DG sets it will give rise to the overvoltage and the
nearest downstream equipments are most probably not safe by
this option of having the capacitor on the DG sets.
Capacitors are required when the power factor is required
to improve and the best practice is it shall be installed
as close possible to the load.

YES ! The DG Rating is always defined in KVA @ 0.8 Pf Lag.
Hence for optimum utilization of the DG power, it will be
best to have the PF regulated to 0.8 PF Lag. However, care
must be taken not to let the PF go into LEAD condition as it
can lead to instabilty of the system voltage. Suggest to
conduct a detailed load study and opt for Automatic PF
Improvement Relay panels wherein the DG target PF can be set
@ 0.8 and for EB the target setting can be 0.95 Lag or above
. (definitely not LEAD)

DG set dis-seined for 0.8 Pf and its capacity also dis-seined according to 0.8 pf so when we increase the pf loading capacity increase but the winding are dis-seined for 0.8 pf.so the winding damsge when the pf is rise.
