Answer / engr, daniel otoyo
For normal concrete which 1:2:4 is in this category, the concrete density is 2400kg/cm
Therefore 1cm of this concrete will weigh 2400x1kg= 2400kg
Sum of mix ratio = 1+2+4 = 7
The ratio (fraction) of cement in the mix is 1/7
And so weight of cement in 1cm of concrete will be 1/7 x 2400 = 342.857kg
Cement in bags of 50kg will translate to 342.857/50 =6.86kg
The above result approximate to 7bags if the required strength of the concrete
is to be achieved.
other constituents of concrete say fine and coarse aggregates can be found
through same procedure.
After finding the weight of the aggregates their densities are used to calculate their volumes.

in the ratio 1:2:4 sand and cement never count for their volume. suppose one bag of cement , two of sand and 4 of metal will make only 5 cum of material

For volume 1 cu.m
Consider:
Cement= 1x1/7=0.14 cu.m = 4 bags, since 1 bag= 0.035 litre
Sand= 1x2/7= 0.29 cu.m
aggregate= 1x4/7= 0.57 cu.m
When we sum up give us: 0.14 + 0.29 +0.59 = 1.02 cu.m

For M15 - 1:2:4
Consider 1 cumec
Summation of M15 Proportion is 1+2+4 = 7
Quantities:
Cement = 1(cumec)/7(summation)
= 0.1428 cumec
= 0.1428/0.0347
= 4.11 = 5 bags
Sand = 4.11 * 2 = 8.22 cumec
Aggregate = 4.11 * 4 = 16.44 cumec
For W/C = 0.45 (Assumed)
Water = 0.45 * 4.11 = 1.85 ltrs
