Answer / jeetendra kadam
current rating also depends on no. of strands & diameter of
the strand. for ex. if u take 2.5sqmm finolex cable, no of
strands are 50 and diameter is 0.25mm or no. of strands are
80 and diameter 0.2mm. It can carry upto 20A AC/DC.
practically I using the cable. pl. check finolex cable wire
chart.

Mr Naidu , why all the confusion.just ask any cable
manufacturer for his cable current carrying capacity table
and with all the information you would have learned by now
apply the info and derive the figures.Actually yr question
was very very simple but the answers have Tobe very complex
because you did not define. All the answers given were
correct.No malice intended.

If the Q is actually how much current can be carried by a
2.5 sq. mm cu cable, the ans is this. Take the rate of
current 3 amp. per sq.mm in case of pvc insulated Cu. wire
for house wiring purposes. This way the total current in
this case is 2.5*3=7.5 amp. However if the wire length is
more, for less loss (I*I*R)in line & for more safety
reasons, the rate of current may be reduced.

keeping in view some saftey margin you can consider the
thumb rule of 1sq.mm of copper wire for 1 KW rated at 230
VAC which gives you around 4.4 amps for continious loading
for 1 sqmm. So, for 2.5 Sq.mm it would be 2.5 x 4.4 = 11
Amps of continious load capacity for all purposes

Dear friends,
current rating never depends on length, actually minimum
voltage drop depends on length, the current rating 3 amp
per sq.mm cable so (2.5 sq.mm x 3) = 7.5 Amp
