Protection class CT are 5 p10 and 5 p 20 and PS class ct
are used where neutral point is available such that star
conneccted secondary of Transformer and alternator ,it is
used for differential protection.

Answer / shivaji mangalagiri
all the protection cts like over current
relay and earth fault relay of transformer,Alternator and
HT motors are having core 1 and core 2 options. CLASS PS
type is used only for differential protection purpose of
transformer,Alternator and
HT motors only. and this type of cts are available only in
PAIR SCHEME (PS) AND their turns ratios,
impedances, VA burdens, knee point etc all these critical
parameters are exactly matched with each other.

Answer / s.rajasekar
the saturation point between the ps is higher than
protection class & metering.and the accurracy is also
higher then protection CT. It has highly efficient so it is
mosly used in sofasticated protections ( REF,DIFF,DISTANCE )

Protection class is ued in protection like over current
relay and earth fault relay of transformer,Alternator and
HT motor.PS class is used in DIfferential protection like
transformer,Alternator and HT motor.

Answer / manoj
Both Protection class and class PS CTs are used in
protection circuits only. As someone mentioned earlier,
class PS CTs are special CTs used in all types of
Differential Protetion scemes. they generally come in pairs
and they are special in sense their turns ratios,
impedances, VA burdens, knee point etc all these critical
parameters are exactly matched with each other.

The Difference Between protection class and metering class
is mainly of saturation, the saturation values of protection
class is higher as when fault occur protection CT must not
get saturated as high current flows and metering CT can be
saturated as when fault occur metering is not necessary,
accuracy is also a factor but not the main factor

Protection CT:
this type of CT can be used for protect the breakers.
5P10,5P15 & 5P20 are called protection current transformer
1) 5 means accuracy of sensing fault current
2) 'P ' means "protection"
3) 10,15 & 20 means ( no.of times ( 10,15 &20 ) X actual
current rating of breakers .
PS CT:
PS means protection special current transformer.
this type CT can be used for differential protection in
transformer & in alternator.

Answer / r.suryamuthuraman
if any fault occurs core needs to saturated for protection
of ct.because ct secondary ckt will goes to relay current
coil .secondary ckt of ct will having resistance and
current.to avoid saturation want to decrease the burden of
ct.ps means special protection having high accuracy than
other class
