you can not create a sales order without item category. but
you can create without scheduleline category. EX Credit
Memos and Debit memos.

U can, but the item category changes from TAN to TEXT. Also
the schedule line category can't be determined for this item.

IN my point of view it is not possible to create a sales
order without item category wheather it is norm item or
text item .
but withou schedule line u can save the sales order .

Item CAT is a must, even if its TATX, but it will be there.

So, if we enter only the description in the Sales Order, the system determines the Item Cat TATX and there is no Schedule Line Tab at the Item Level. May be thats what the Interviewer wanted to know.

only the description in the line item and press enter
system will determine tatx item category This is posible
