In step down transformer (415/200V),mistakenly secondary
side is connected to 415V for some hours, what would be
result of this condition?

Answer / ankaraju
The secondary side is rating of 200v,if you considering
loop the net current flowing throw winding increases hence
losses also increases and winding over heated,if it so on
for hours winding insulation may failed. And another one is
core is nearer to low winding, due to high voltage core
losses and core insulation between laminations also failed.

secondary side winding turns is designed for 200 volts. If
we give 415v the secondary side winding turns will not
sustain the voltage . For which insulation and winding both
will damage .If we give 415v to secondary the primary will
get 816.125v

The current at 200v side will be more than what designed
for the transformer and core loss will be more. So
ultimately, transformer will be heated up more faster than
ordinary condition. Depends upon the insulation used for
core construction, and how long u are connected the supply,
there r chances of insulation failiure.

as 2ndary side winding is design for 2oo volt so when we
connect 2ndary side to 415 volt, then after some hour the
2ndary winding burnt.

Answer / neeraj
the whole transformer will burn up.
i do it practical one time.
but in future i will not do such thing.
| Is This Answer Correct ? | 4 Yes | 1 No |
if Secondary puts 415v, than primary wants to take the
voltage upto 850v, & it can burn the winding of the
transformer.

Answer / partha
In this case, the transformer will undergo insulation
degradation. Also due to the increased voltage, the core
losses will increase. The core will be also subjected to
overfluxing which will cause saturation and increased core
losses.
