if your power factor is suppose 0.75, and you have to improve your pf to unity then find the inverse cos of 0.75, then find the tan(cos^-1(0.75)).
then find the value you have to improve the pf suppose you have to maintain to unity then, cos^-1(1) then find the tan (cos^-1(1)).
the find the [tan (cos^-1(1)) - tan(cos^-1(0.75))] * kw of motor

To maintain p.f. we use capacitor bank generally.for LV system we use APFC and in HV System we use bus capacitor.In industries we generally use equipments having lagging pf like motors, lighting chokes etc ,capacitors supplies reactive power to the system and improve power factor

The size of your capacitor bank will depend upon your load, existing power factor and your required power factor.

In alternator generally we give DC voltage to field of alternator but field (excitor)produce Ac & converts into DC by rotating rectifier(RR ) then fed to rotor .my question is why we cannot give dc voltage directly to rotor instead of Excitor & RR ?
