IN CIVIL ENGINEERING DESIGN WHY WE ARE USING LIMIT STATE
METHOD IS BEST?
I THINK WORKING STRESS METHOD IS BEST?
EX; FOR COLOUMN DESIGN IN LIMIT STATE METHOD AST
IS;1913SQ.MM
SAME TIME WORKING STRESS METHOD IS ;2213.
SO I THINK WORKING STRESS METHOD IS VERY STRONG COMPARE
THEN LIMIT STATE METHOD?
MY OPENING IS CORRECT OR NOT? PLS TO EXPLAIN SIRS

dear
what is u r qualification if ur a civil engineer this is a
stupid question.
see there is difference in working stress method and limit
state method
eg. if we design any member of building in case of working
stress method ie eg FOR 1000KN THERE IS DESIGN FOR ONLY
THIS LOAD
BUT in case of limit state method a factor of safety 1.5 is
used ie same member in limit state will be designed FOR
1.5 X 1000 = 1500KN
THUS THERE IS SAFETY IN DESIGN UR MEMBER CAN WITHSTAND LOAD
OF 1000KN BUT WE DESIGN IT TO WITHSTAND A LOAD 1500KN IE U
R STRUCTURE WILL NOT FAIL.
IF U DESIGN STRUCTURE FOR 1000KN LOAD AND ITS LOAD
CARRYING CAPACITY IS 1000KN THEN U R STRUCTURE WILL
COLLAPSE
THUS LIMITE STATE METHEOD IF BEST TODAY
IN 1900 WORKING STREE METHOD CAME
AFTER THAT ULTIMATE LOAD METHOD CAME
& THEN CAME LIMIT STATE METHOD

in limit state method we are considering facorad load that
is in this method their is more factored of sefty than
workingstress mathod and one more reasone is that in limmt
state all kinds of limit is consider while designing e.g
limit state og bending, which is not considered in working
stress method

in WORKING STRESS METHOD,(for ex, if we want to use M20
grade in any place we will use M15 grade), that is minimise
the characteristic strength of the material, this is taken
when u r in designing stage.
in LIMIT STATE METHOD (for ex, we have design a member
takes 1 ton in this method we take 1.5 ton) in this method
we will take the actual charateristic strengtn of the
material.

Good Civil Engineers, before posting any answer, must also
write the matter in clear English for others to really
understand the content. Also, decency should always
maintained.
Limit state is definetely a superior version of design as
it guides to designing a structure considering all
eventualities and all overall structural failure conditions.

in working stres method member is designed consedering
ultimate strength of the material where as in limit state
method members are designed considering yeilding strength
stress thats why members of less c/s area can be use

in limit state method a factory of safety of 0.5 will be
considered (eg: for designing a colum of 1KN factor of
safety 0.5 will be multiplied hence it will become 1.5) so
column withstand even if it is loaded more than its required
capacity
in working stress method the column is designed only for 1
KN load.

working stress design is more conservative than limit state
method.concrete being a brittle material high factor of
safety is adopted (i.e-3).it is a stress approach,in case of
limit state partial factor of safety is used load is
factored and this a strain approach.

Answer / somnath
In case of limit state method, before failure of any member it will show some sign like bending and also we considered a safe factor of safety
while in case of working stress method it will not show such signs.
