Why HT cable have only 3 core ?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
Basically the HT cable is used for transmission line only
not in distribution line. Because we are using delta
connection (Three phase Three wire system) for transmission
and star connection (Three phase Four four wire system). So
that's why the HT cables have three cores only.

HT cables are rated at 1000v to 11kv.This is the range of
transmission voltage. In normal transmission line three
conductor are required.Electrical power is generated at
power plant(11kv normally),then stepped up by transformers
to transmit power to far substation. The secondary winding
of these transformers are in delta connection.
Whereas LT cables are rated up to 1000kv used for
distribution purpose.they are generally of 3.5 core,4 core
etc.three are for phase one for neutral. In the distribution
transformer secondary winding is generally star
connected.so we get 3 core 4 wire o/p(1 wire for neutral)

beacuse we using delta star connection so the incoming will
be 3 core for delta(3 phse

HT line means contaning of three phase only(R,Y,B). There
is no Neutral. That is what HT cables having only 3 Cores
with armouring for earthing.

Its very much economical to transmit power by using delta
connections since for very large distances, neutral need
not be used.

Delta connection is best suitable for the transmission of
power where as the star connections is for the
distribution.to avoid the long laying of cable for neutral,
basicaly 3 core HT cable used after that through trafo they
will change to thier requirement.
It may result in failure of neutral or week in neatral, in
case of damage or break.

HT cable is used for high voltage transmission purpose due
to avoid the corrona and losses becose of HT cable 3 core
is used for only transmisson of the voltage without neutral
of the genaretion side or power station.

as per system contain only three phase thats why requirment
is for three core & in system used three core.

We all have seen transmission and Distribution lines In transmission lines the voltage is high and current is low(to reduce I^2r loss) and in distribution lines voltage is low but current is high however the size of transmission wires is bigger than that of distribution wires even though the amount of current carried by the distribution lines is more than that of transmission lines why?
