what do you mean by leading power factor & lagging power factor..

Answer / n.hemavathy

If in a circuit, current lags behind the voltage then the
resulting power factor is said to be lagging. Ex: Inductive
loads.

If in a circuit, current leads the voltage then the
resulting power factor is said to be leading.
Ex: capacitive loads.

Power factor is the ratio of real power to reactive power.

what do you mean by leading power factor & lagging power factor..

Answer / sudheer

power factor is the ratio of true power and apparent power.
when the load is inductive, the inductance tends to oppose
the flow of current, storing energy then realising it later
in the cycle. the current wave forms lags behind the
voltage wave form.
when the load is capacitive, the opposite occurs, and the
current wave form leads the voltage waveform.

P.F.=COS#= TRUE POWER\APPARENT POWER
FOR INDUCTIVE LOAD INDUCTOR IS USED WHICH OPPOSES THE
CHANGE IN CURRENT IN THE CIRCUIT AND STORES THE ENERGY IN
THE FORM OF CURRENT AND LEAVES IT LATER. HENCE THE CURRENT
CURRENT WAVEFORM LAGS THE VOLTAGE WAVEFORM, AND THE POWER
FACTOR IS CALLED LAGGING./
FOR CAPACITIVE LOAD CAPACITOR IS USED WHICH OPPOSES THE
CHANGE IN VOLTAGE AND STORES THE ENERGY IN THE FORM OF
VOLTAGE AND LEAVES IT LATER. HENCE THE VOLTAGE WAVEFORM
LAGS THE CURRENT WAVEFORM, AND THE POWER FACTOR IS CALLED
LAGGING BUT THE CURRENT LEADS THE VOLTAGE AND HENCE THE
P.F. IS CALLED LEADING P.F.

what do you mean by leading power factor & lagging power factor..

Answer / rahul

well this concept of lag or lead has meaning only when both
VOLT and CURRENT waves are SINUSOIDAL...
For sinusoidal V and I, usually we consider V as reference
phasor and LEAD indicates I leads V(eg. for capacitive
loads) while LAG indicates I lags V(eg. for inductive
loads).
Basically concept of LEAD is rather ambiguous. coz for
capacitive ckt actually "V lags I" rather than "I leads V".

what do you mean by leading power factor & lagging power factor..

Answer / r. p. sirohi

If in a electrical Circuit, the current lead the voltage , then it called leading power factor ex- Capacitors load.
If in a electrical circuit the cuurent leg the volatage , then it called lagging power factor ex- Inductive load.

what do you mean by leading power factor & lagging power factor..

Answer / lokesh kumar

power factor is nothing but it is the ratio of average power to the (RMS current *RMS voltage)...in general it is the cosine angle between voltage and and current...

Answer / anbumani r

If in a circuit, current lags behind the voltage by 90 degree then the resulting power factor is said to be lagging. Ex: Inductive loads.

If in a circuit, current leads the voltage by 90 degree then the resulting power factor is said to be leading.
Ex: capacitive loads.

Power factor is the ratio of real power to reactive power

Answer / simon

Pf is of 3 types i.e
1.Leading (Xc>Xl)
2. Lagging(Xc,Xl)
3.Unity (Xc=Xl)

1.In A.C Circuit if cap Reactance's has more current in comparison of inductive reactance's then Voltage will lead.
2.In A.C Circuit if cap Reactance's has less current in comparison of inductive reactance's then Voltage will lag.
3.In A.C Circuit if both r equal then it will b unity.
