what do you mean by leading power factor & lagging power
factor
Answer Posted / siddarth.m
If in a circuit, current lags behind the voltage then the
resulting power factor is said to be lagging. Ex: Inductive
loads.
If in a circuit, current leads the voltage then the
resulting power factor is said to be leading.
Ex: capacitive loads.
Power factor is the ratio of real power to reactive power
P.F.=COS#= TRUE POWER\APPARENT POWER
FOR INDUCTIVE LOAD INDUCTOR IS USED WHICH OPPOSES THE
CHANGE IN CURRENT IN THE CIRCUIT AND STORES THE ENERGY IN
THE FORM OF CURRENT AND LEAVES IT LATER. HENCE THE CURRENT
CURRENT WAVEFORM LAGS THE VOLTAGE WAVEFORM, AND THE POWER
FACTOR IS CALLED LAGGING./
FOR CAPACITIVE LOAD CAPACITOR IS USED WHICH OPPOSES THE
CHANGE IN VOLTAGE AND STORES THE ENERGY IN THE FORM OF
VOLTAGE AND LEAVES IT LATER. HENCE THE VOLTAGE WAVEFORM
LAGS THE CURRENT WAVEFORM, AND THE POWER FACTOR IS CALLED
LAGGING BUT THE CURRENT LEADS THE VOLTAGE AND HENCE THE
P.F. IS CALLED LEADING P.F.
power factor is the ratio of true power and apparent power.
when the load is inductive, the inductance tends to oppose
the flow of current, storing energy then realising it later
in the cycle. the current wave forms lags behind the
voltage wave form.
when the load is capacitive, the opposite occurs, and the
current wave form leads the voltage waveform.
