Batch is used when the material is perishable and has a shelf life period or its a legal requirement in pharma/food processing industry where composition of material would be maintained uniform across a batch. You have to activate batch classification in classification tab of material master where you can define characteristics which distinguishes the batch, which can later be used to search a batch on FIFO or LIFO. You need to activate it for plant and the indicator is available in Purchasing tab and couple of other tabs. If you need system to search batches while issuing the material you need to define batch search strategy.

While making a GRN,we have to check the box of batch
management.i.e we are going to use the material only for
the production and delivery the same.
By doing this,we can calculate in this batch, how much we

if the item is purchased in batches like if the vendor is
ordered a material in different batches like the delivery
dates are different for the same material to supply, it is
batch management.
Also it is most important while carrying out MRP. material
is ordered by Prodn control people based on prodn
requirement and at the time of creation of MRP if they
select batch , it will consider the same for future
processing.

Material number has to be 30 Digit. So how to get this is SAP? The present 18 Digit is NOT at all sufficient for the business? It has to be Alpha Numeric or sometimes only numbers. It must be external numbering system only & not the SAP generated internal number range because material number or name is given by Vendors. Ex: ABC1234, 89900-0098-8987, Y778-009, 77777766665444433322211-A, etc
