why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / pritam kumar(gges)

now a day transmission line consumed 4 to 6% of the total power...
But in early days it consumed arround 10% of the total power, and formfactor value is 1.11.so generated voltage design as multiples of 11.

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / vivek

No. Form Factor has nothing to do here. It is not a reason.

I answered this question on Quora. Follow up this link

This provides the actual reason.

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / abhinesh

we get all work in RMS value of voltages & in generating
stations we get the average value(we get fluctuating voltage
therefore we take the average) & RMS is form factor(1.11 for
sinusoidal)multiplied by average value.

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / sudhir

bulk electric power is generated at medium voltages,i.e.4-
25kv.Because electric machines are optimal in these
ranges.if we generate power above11kv than insulation of
electric generator get damage. So generated power in india
is 11kv.

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / siddhesh mhatre

reason is something historical: in olden days when the electricity became popular, engineers had a misconception that there would be a voltage loss of around 10% in the transmission line. So, in order to get 10 kilovolts at the load point, they started sending 11 kilovolts from supply side. This is the reason. It has nothing to do with form factor (1.11).

Nowadays that thought has changed and we are using 400 V instead of 440 V, or 230 V instead of 220 V.

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / krishnamachari kapil kumbhar

Form factor is the main player here. wherether generation
or transmission we bother on electric power. in ac circuit
power flows/generate/consumed in the form sinosoidal
wave.and to quantify it current and voltage taken into
account.more over the value of v or i is varying w.r.t
time.so for all complete cycle rms and avg value is taken
as reference.

Now for alternating voltage or current the form factor
relates rms and avg values i.e 1.11 and as areference all
generating and transmission voltage are multiple of 1.11.

the funda behind it is more conventional than technical as
conventional current.

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / sachin sharma...

generating voltage depends upon the total power capacity of the unit since for a low power gen. unit (e.g 126 MW ) lower armature insulation needed ,if we generate 11 kv, but if for a same unit gen. voltage is 33 kv then the it takes more armature insulation that increases the cost and size .

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / aman

The Answer To the Question why Generating Station Produces multiple of 11 Kva Is Not Using The Form Factor i.e -1.11 but the Fact is that At Receiving Ends they Require 10,20,30... Kva. Some Of the Energy Is consumed Due to Voltage Drop and losses During Transmission so They Generate an Extra 10% Energy of the Required energy i.e 11kva....

why the generating voltage in India is 11kV or why is it be transmitted as multiples of 11..

Answer / anurag kumar

Because the form factor of sinusoidal wave is 1.11,therefore the power is generated in 11kV, 33kV etc...
