Is earthing done for AC or DC or both?

for ac only guys..........dc has its own returning path
(called -ve terminal) it cant flow through earth untill
unless -ve terminal of dc source is earthed.

earthing is done only for ac and in case of dc it have its
own returning,as one of my friend have already answered.
another point is, in HVDC transmission earth can be used as
one of the conductor to reduce the amount of conductor
used.since,there is no interference effect in HVDC system.
