We have a 12MW power plant & we inject 5-6MW power to
Orissa GRID. For this we have a 33KV/11KV switch yard
having 12.5MVA power transformer. Some times we draw power
during emergency. It is observed that during Export or
Import for load less than 500Kw the power factor is
decreasing to 0.3 . This is happening only during export or
import. During island condition TG power factor OK.Our
capacitor bank is provided with our Power plant auxilliary
load. Please suggest how I can we improve our power factor
during low load (GRID).

This problem can be solved by switching off all capacitor
banks during low load. we have faced Similar type of
problem in our cement plant loads which are fluctuating in
nature which causes export / import of power fluctuation(
loads go +500kw and - 500kw withing 1 or two seconds).

The main reason for this low power factor is due to
reactive power consumption of your 12.5 MVA power
transformer.

During export, it may be possible to improve pf with
excitation.The low pf may also be attributed to erroneous
measurement by CT's at very low loads.Tr may also contribute
to low pf to some extent depending on positions of pf meter
and capacitor bank .

After synchronizing the running generator with grid, the avr getting tripped and the generator breaker also oettong tripped, before tripping the avr the pf meter of generator is showing leading pf please kindly give a suggestion to rectify this problem.
