Power factor is the cosine of angle between voltage &
current.i.e cos(phi)
or
It is the ratio of Active power to reactive power
cos(phi)=KW/KVA

To Chetan,
Suppose u got 80 out 0f 100 in an exam.
this means u r at a pf of 0.8, the class topper got 95, so
his PF is 0.95.
Now note that KVA is ur total marks(100)
and KW is what u scored.
now its simple pf=kw/kva

In the above:
cos(phi)=PF= KW/KVA formula is correct.
but KVA is apparent power not reactive power.
KVA= V*I ,
KW=V*I*cos(phi) ,
KVAR= V*I*sin(phi)
KVA=apparent power=Sqrt(KW*KW + KVAR*KVAR)
