HOW DO A DISTANCE RELAY SENSES THE FAULTY ZONE.
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
Answer / amit sharma
distance relay operates on the zone impedance. If impedance
seen by the relay in the zone is less than the rated imp.
then relay trips and the zone is isolated.

Distances relay senses the faulty zone if impedance seen by
the relay is below the set value then it operates and
isolates the faulty zone.
z=v/i below the set, then operates
zone1= 80% of protected line
Zon2=100%protected line + 50%shortest line
Zon3= 100%protected line + 100% longest line.
