The above answer is correct but i just want to add that in
general commutator works in converting AC to DC and vice
versa as in case of DC generator.

i m agree both answer.but commutator is also used for
input&output in dc machine to the help of carbon brush

why can't we increase the voltage by increasing the field voltage in order to get higher voltage.so that we can eliminate step up transformer
