If the damper winding on the rotor of a synchronous motor is
removed after starting what will happen?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
damper windings are mainly used to provide startn torque
for sync motors.though under the normal running
condition, the damper does not carry any current since the
rotor runs at a synchronous speed, it cannot b removed.its
another purpose is to prevent hunting(i.e,momentary speed
fluctuation) n helps the motor to run @ sync speed by
preventing oscillations.

When synchronous motor get started than it run at
synchronous speed. at this time damper has not current. the
second purpose is it provied synchronzing power in case of
disturbance.this power pull the machine in the synchronizm
again. so if we remove the after starting than machine will
work in synchronizm but as load incresed machine will not
work as synchronous motor.

in synchronous motor Damper winding mainly used to damp out the oscillation, which may occur due to any sudden load change, that's why its called DAMPER WINDING ( not a starting winding). but at the time of starting it is used as a starting winding also ( but this is not a primary use of it).

1- Damper windings helps the synchronous motor to start
on its own (self starting machine) by providing starting torque
2- By providing damper windings in the rotor of
synchronous motor "Hunting of machine"can be suppressed. When
there is change in load, excitation or change in other
conditions of the systems rotor of the synchronous motor
will oscillate to and fro about an equilibrium position. At
times these oscillations becomes more violent and resulting
in loss of synchronism of the motor and comes to halt

damper windings are mainly used to provide startn torque
for sync motors.though under the normal running
condition, the damper still carry little current even the
rotor runs at a synchronous speed, it still can be removed.
i already done the lab experiment.
its another purpose is to prevent hunting(i.e,momentary speed
fluctuation) n helps the motor to run @ sync speed by
preventing oscillations.

damper winding is connected to stator winding togive
starting torque to synchronous machine.once the motor is
started it can be removed but it is not practically
possible.

Damper windings in synchrous motor only for the purpose of
starting(Sychronous motors are not self started type).after
motor get started damper winding can be removed.
