Electricty is generated at around 16kV, then step up to
220kV for transmission then steped down to power
transformers then DTs and then through the LT n/w it reaches
the consumer end.
At the consumer end 230V supply is required. So, why is
electricity not generated directly at 230V and transmitted?

Answer / abhinav

what happened in a transmission line is that there occurs
losses while transmitting power on the transmission lines
due to the conductors.
as The higher the current then the greater the power losses
power loss = I^2R (ohmic loss)
so we prefer to step up the voltage becoz the higher the
voltage , lower is the current.
so it is always necessary to transmit the power after
stepping it up so as to reduce losses..

Abhinav is write as if we transmit 220volt through long
distance we need heavy conductors as current increases.

Answer / naveen

WE KNOW ,P=VI AND P=V^2/R SO AS WE INCREASE VOLTAGE THEN LOSSES ARE VERY LESS FOR EXAMPLE IF WE TRANSMITED 10 VOLT THEN RECEIVED 100/R AND IF WE TRANSMITTED 100 VOLT THEN WE RECEIVED 10000/R.

Answer / anil kumar verma

power is generated at power plants which are generally
situated at far distance from the actual users at 220
volts. so power has to be transmitted to these users. if
power is transmitted at 220 volts then due to high currents
at low voltage transmission losse will be very high & very
low voltage will be experienced at consumer end. so to
minimise the losses power is generated & transmitted at
high voltage. moreover generation & transmission at 220
volts will not be cost effective.
