Electricty is generated at around 16kV, then step up to
220kV for transmission then steped down to power
transformers then DTs and then through the LT n/w it reaches
the consumer end.
At the consumer end 230V supply is required. So, why is
electricity not generated directly at 230V and transmitted?

Answer Posted / anil kumar verma

power is generated at power plants which are generally
situated at far distance from the actual users at 220
volts. so power has to be transmitted to these users. if
power is transmitted at 220 volts then due to high currents
at low voltage transmission losse will be very high & very
low voltage will be experienced at consumer end. so to
minimise the losses power is generated & transmitted at
high voltage. moreover generation & transmission at 220
volts will not be cost effective.

why do motors burn out? I understand why adding parallel loads to a power source means more current moves through the circuit, and can destroy circuit elements by overheating.
