As a software tester ur main work are:
write testcase against the requirement or buisness
requirement and execute it and if there is a mismatch
between expected and actual result, log the defect and give
a severity and report back to the developer.
Good software tester must have good understanding of the
whole application or product life cycle.your main aim is to
write minimum testcases with maximum bug detect capacity.

The role of a software test engineer in company is to find
the defect. He/She should have "test-to-break" attitude.
He/She has to test the application taking the customer into
mind. He should work hard for quality.

Generally Roles and Responsibilities of a Testing Engineer
may vary, depending upon the working company. But here we
are going to discuss about the general and important roles
and responsibilities of a Testing Engineer.
1) Analyzing the Requirements from the client
2) Participating in preparing Test Plans
3) Preparing Test Scenarios
4) Preparing Test Cases for module, integration and system
testing
5) Preparing Test Data’s for the test cases
6) Preparing Test Environment to execute the test cases
7) Analyzing the Test Cases prepared by other team members
8) Executing the Test Cases
9) Defect Tracking
10) Giving mandatory information of a defect to developers
in order to fix it

Apart from all the traditional Testing practices like
writing testcases, reporting and monitoring those, Software
testers are having some more major responsibilities:
1) Analyze and identify the flaws/mismatches in the
requirements.
2) Confirm the best Usability of the application.
3) Identify the main integration points in the appilcation
across different modules, before the starting of the actual
testing, so this will indirectly guide the development team
into the right way.
4) Suggest the best ways to improve the usability and to
abide the businees rules(Requirements).
5) Indirectly 'Software Testers' are the REAL PROJECT
MANAGERS/PROCESS DRIVERS.
