what is meant by a slip?..

Answer / gajanan

slip is defined as the ratio of difference between
synchonous speed(Ns) and actual speed(N) to synchonous
speed.

S= Ns-N/Ns. and
percentage slip=Ns-N/Ns*100.

Answer / manoj kumar mishra

difference between synchronous speed(Ns)in rotating
magnetic field of stator and actual roret speed(N) is
called slip. it repersented by persentage slip S

persentage slip S = Ns - N

Slip of belt

Belt drive is not a positive drive because of the insufficient friction between pulley and belt, the linear speed of rim of pulley and that of the belt on it are different. this difference is known as slip in the belt drive. Slip occurs due to motion of driver without carrying belt over it or motion of belt without taking follower with it.

Let S1 be the percentage slip between driver pulley and belt,

S2 be the percentage slip between belt and driven pulley and

v is the linear velocity of belt per minute.

v = π d1 N1 – π d1 N1 × S1 / 100

v = π d1N1 (1 – S1 / 100) …(1)

Similarly πd2N2 = v – v × S2 / 100 = v (1 – S2 / 100) …(2)

Putting value of v from eq. (1)

πd2N2 = πd1N1 (1 – S1 / 100) × (1 – S2 / 100)

N2 / N1 = d1 / d2 (1 – S1 / 100) × (1 – S2 / 100)

= d1 / d2 [1 – (S1 + S2 / 100)]

Let S = S1 + S2 be the total percentage of slip

N2 / N1 = d1 / d2 [(1 – S/100)]

If thickness of the belt (t) is considered then,

N2 / N1 = d1 + t / d2 + t (1 – S / 100)

If a number of pulleys are used to transmit power then

Nlast follower / Nfirst driver = d1.d3.d5… / d2.d4.d6… [1 – S/100]

where d1.d3.d5… are diameters of the drivers and d2.d4.d6 are diameters for the followers. S is total percentage of slip in all stages.
