What is the difference between short circuit and overload
currents?

Answer / deepak mishra
When occurs short circuit, current should be rapidly higher for example- normal current is 10A and after short circuit- current is 300A and
When occurs overload, current should not be rapidly higher but it is scanty increase. For example normal current is 10A And after overload -current is scanty increase 15A.20A,28A,40A like that and not a repidly increase.

d.s david's ans. is right. overload current is takes place
upto 120 times. & above that is overcurrent due to earth
fault, short circuit.it has no intended path. so, it in KA
Ratings.
as par dmt chr. overload current equip. can sustain.& time
is more as comparable to s/c current. s/c current can
rising in msec.

I agree with answer #8 short circuit have diffrent types of
fauls L-L, L-G, 3ph S/Cetc seee iec-60909.the S/C current
when to hot wires (un-grounded) wire make unintended
contact with each other; p 2 p S/c has thus been created.It
created unbalance fault of the system. This means
interruption of the system.... unlike Overload current is
interrrupted the load itself by means of overload
protection setting (Thermal Load) relay operated well to
trip. This mostly different not the same ..In shotr S/c
interrrup the system Max. interrrupting value (Ka) while
Overload currents happens only in motors stated by answer#8
Additinally,S/C analysis is onthe importance in power
system study because it protec the whole system by the
right choices of prtection device and by the right study of
devise -coordination the tripping curve will not overlap
with respect to the point of S/C fault who will be the
first to tripp rather than the last breker it was so called
the selection of the right tripping ( Long & Short Circuit
delay)
