I agree to the above comment to a certain extent. The
purpose of maintaining the lead time in Sales doc type might
be to cummulate the time that is required to produce or
procure the material.But in SD perspective it is used in
calculating the requeted delivery date in the SO. you can
check it by customising the leadtime and checking the
defaulted delivery date after customising.
If there is any disagreement to my point, Kindly convey so
that I can correct myself.

As asnwered above that lead time in sales document type is
meant for the required production time,the value is set
based on the client's specific.Its not all about defaulting
requested delivery date in sales order.That has got nothing
to do with Req.delv date.

Specify lead time in days by which system adds to current
date as propose requested delivary date by default.

lead time are the no. of days that is used to default the
requested delivery date feild in a document type.
For eg: in cash sales or rush order the lead time
maintained is zero, as the delivery has to be done
immediately. So requested delivery date normaly becomes the
current date. If you leave it blank, then the req delivery
date has to be keyed in manualy.so the req delivery date is
calculated by current date + lead time in days mentioned in
the doc type

In a Third party process how does the company knows that the goods are delivered to the customer or not? What sort of communication happens between Customer to vendor, Vendor to company? Hoe does the communication happens or acknowledgement is given regarding delivery of goods to customer? Suppose if your vendor is not using SAP system in such a scenario how does the vendor communicate with the company reg delivery of goods to customer is there any tracking mechanism or control is there?I have been asked this question in an recent interview.
