difference between specification and method of statement..

Answer / john

Hello my name in John I'm an architectural engineer with more than 3 years of experience in engineering field.. I hope this will help.

specification making depends on what specifications your going to specify.

like for example ill make specifications regarding architectural work, you will just usually specify your materials and scope of work.. see sample below.

1. Doors - should be painted green and have a dimension of 2100mm x 900mm they should be 50mm THK. and have stainless steel handles. Door frames should be painted green to match with the door leaf.

2. Windows - should be 900x1200mm wide, the window frames should be tubular and powder coated and to be painted green to match with the doors.

3. Ceiling - height should be 2400mm from the floor finish, the ceiling should be 6mm thk. fiber cement board. to be painted green to match with the doors.

4. floor – will be covered with 600x600x6mm thk. Floor tiles, color to match with door.

etc....

While in method statement you should specify the instruction or the step by step procedure in construction..

e.g. Lets say you'll make an architectural method statement.. see sample below..

step 1. Before any architectural works can begin the site engineer will make sure all structural works should be completed first..
step 2. after the structural is finished install all supporting systems required by MEP. Structural engineer to supervise site installation..
step 3. Create all necessary wall opening and clean them with (whatever the subcontractors proposal) so that dust other vermin cant compromise the integrity of the openings.
step 4. Install all doors and windows as per the suppliers specifications. (usually attachment of catalogue is inserted).
Step 5. Install all ceiling and necessary supports required make sure that the connections are complying with building codes etc…
Step6. Before installing floors make sure that the floor have the minimum amount of dust/vermin then apply a water proofing paint all over the wet area after provide a 20mm thk. Setting concrete, and layout the tiles accordingly.
Step 7. Install blah blah blah blahh......... with supervision of site engineer blah blah blah…

I hope this samples will help you understand better..

Please note that these are just samples. Writing specifications and method statements are much more complicated than what I have shown above, these are just simplified versions, to be able to write them properly you need to have a lot of site (construction) experiences + knowledge in handling and installation of materials..

difference between specification and method of statement..

Answer / lucy

Specification is the minimum requirement of the project.

e.g.
1. All corridors should not be less than 1.2 meters in width.
2. All ceiling height should be not less than 2.75 meters in height.
3. There should be 1 dedicated parking space for every 10 building occupant.
4. If the corridor is more than 100 meters, there should be a minimum of 3 exit stairs.
5. If a single room have more than 50 occupants, it should have a minimum of 2 exit doors.
6. All internal rooms shall be finish painted.
7. The building Façade should be covered with aluminum cladding.
8. All rooms should have a wooden door.

For specifications, always remember the word : "minimum requirement"

Method statement is the installation method.

You need to describe how are you going to install different items.

e.g.
1. how will you install doors?
2. how will you install windows?
3. how will you install furnitures?
4. how will you install toilet fixtures?
5. how will you install lights?
6. how will you install the foundations?
7. how will you install the tiles?
8. how will you paint the walls?
