PLC mean programmable logic controler
DCS mean distribution control system
before different plc have digital inputs & outputs but DCS
digital & analog both.
now new plc also both digital & analoge inputs & outputs
in plc we can not change in software during running but in
DCS we can.also plc for small inputs &outputs but dcs for
big industries i mean more inputs & outputs.
plc have quick reponse than DCS.

2.Nature of process application i-e critical or non-critial
3.HMI form one or more Control Rooms
4.HOT SWAP(removing I/O Cards during plant Running)need or
not.
5.Plant Future extension required or not.
6.Logical synchronous or Non synchronous system require
7.Progamming Fexibility level requirements
8.Single Control process required or Distributed
9.Permanent installation or for short time
10.Expensive solution or non-expensive
and many more factors can easily diffrentiate it.

PLC - PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER
It is sequential Control the limited I/O'S from the digital & analog.and it's single device to control the field process variable.
DCS - DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM
It is continuous control the no of I/O's from the field.and it is consist no of controller to control the no of process variable.

plc, dcs are the controllers,
plc it controlling or operatig only one function
dcs it is controlling no functions at a time.
plc(one i/p---->one o/p)
dcs(one (or)more i/ps------> no of o/ps )

Q1: Consider part of a control loop, which excludes the transmitter, consisting of a process, a controller and a control valve which may be represented by two dead times of 0.5 min each and three exponential lags of 0.8 min., 1.0 min. and 1.5 min. respectively. We wish to express this system as an overall first order plus dead time (FOPLD) model ie gain, time constant and process dead time. (We will see later that this is often done, to simplify controller tuning). For this exercise, gain is considered to be 1.0. (A) If the transmitter is a flow transmitter whose behaviour can be described by a dead time of 0.2 min. and an exponential lag of 0.5 min. in terms of the overall dead time and overall first order lag how can the system behaviour be approximated ? Overall dead time = Overall time constant = (B) If the transmitter is a temperature transmitter with a temperature sensor in a protecting well whose behaviour can be described by a dead time of 0.7 min. and an exponential lag of 15 min. how can the overall system behaviour be approximated now? Overall dead time = Overall time constant =
