why there is 1 phase and 3 phase but not 2 phase and 4 phase?

There is 2phase supply, but it is dedicated only to the railways not for commercial and domestic use. and about 4phase, it's not Indian standards, and more conductors are required and structure of transmission tower will be huge in case for 4phase.

As Ram kumar says i.e. there is more no. of conductor will
required for more no. of phases is correct,and also for
large load we require more power which can be generated by
only three phase motor and a large kw motor cant be started
by single, two and foure phases, it required leading or
laging power which is only possible with three phase.
