diode is a passive element. It is because an active element
is capable to generate poewer or energy of its own which
diode cann't.

diode is a psssive element as it does not require power to
show its effect on source, it uses same input power of
source to show its effect

diode is active element because it can generate minimum
voltage accross it with out supplying any exteranl voltage
source
But for resistor capacitor inductor are not able to produce
voltage accross it with out supplying any external voltage.
that is why these are called passive elements

Strictly speaking diode is a passive element because if we
consider the V-I characteristics which describes the type of
element are non-linear for the diode.Non-linearity in
characteristics implies the passive element and linear
implies the active element. But if we consider the small part
of the V-I characteristics of diode it seems to be
linear. For that portion only it acts as a linear element
that is what actually we do in electronics. This linear
relationship is preferred for Small signal analysis of the
Electronic components.

Diode is one type of resistor so it has not require power.
Diode is working in effect of input-signal.Diode only store
the energy not generate it so it is a passive device.

An active device has a mechanism to control flow of current/
electrons through it. A passive device on the the hand has no
such mechanism. So according to this definition, diode is a
passive element. A simple check is that all 2 terminal
devices are passive and more than two terminal devices are
active.
