where do we connect tap of tap changer, to H.V. side or
L.V.side? and why?

There are mainly two reasons for this. Normally tap
changers are used to improve the LV side voltages. Such
cases the taps are provided on the HV side.
LV voltage= (HV voltage*Nlv/Nhv). So by reducing the number
of turns of the hv side we can increase the lv side voltage.
Also current in hv side is less compared to lv side and
thus the arcing is less for hv side tap changers.

Answer / thiyagarajan
because in lv sides current will be very high it is
difficult for the switching contacts carry higher currents
so tap changers will be always used in hv sides

always provide tap changer on hv side becouse
1.hv winding outside the lv winding easily we connect.
2.small current flow through it as compared to lv winding.
3.smoother control of the output voltage bcoz large turn ratio

Answer / pappu
becuase number of turns on h.v. side is large than that of the l.v. side....also the hv winding is placed over the l.v. winding, thats why it is easily to tap

Normaly its connected in the primary side of the
transformer its not a matter of HV or LV why we use the tap
changer? in case of variation in the input output also
varied ( increase or decrease)we need to maintain the
constant voltage at the output by varing the tape we can
get the constant voltage at the output the AVR also used
for the same function

At site, we have 30Kw motor (3 phase, 400V,50Hz) and FLC 54A as per the nameplate. At the time of starting it draws 840A instead of 390A (7.2%). As per the data sheet also its 390A starting current. it thru a dol starter from the MCC. can anyone tell what is the problem in the motor
