Why is a condensor used in a rankine cycle?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
condenser in a power plant is a heat exchanger for
transforming the vapor form(steam) in to liquid form
(water). this is because if we directly send the steam
without changing its phase the pump work required for
pumping the steam is more because steam occupies more
volume, where as if we convert in to water it can be easily
pumped with less pump work.this is because specific volume
of steam is more compared to water.

Unless there is a condenser cycle violates the second law of thermodynamics.(violate kelvin plank statement.)
second law - consist of 2 statements
1. kelvin plank statement - It is impossible for any device to operate on a cycle to receive heat from a single reservoir(e.g-boiler) and produce work.(this means cycle should dissipate heat to another lower temperature body. it is a condenser in rankine cycle.)
2. Clausius statement - It is impossible for any device to operate on a cycle and produce no effect other than transfer heat from lower temperature body to higher temperature body.(means heat pumping cannot be done without a compressor).
this is a law. not a theorem.(difference between a theorem and a law is a theorem can be proved and a law isn't.) This law is based on practice.

After expanding in turbine coming out fluid is partially
liquid and partialy in vapour form and for the next cycle to
go through it has pump which can handle only liquid thats
why a condenser is required to convert whole fluid as in
single liquid form.

condenser is used to reduce the heat energy from the working fluid and in order to resupply the exhausted fluid to the boiler it should be at pressure equal or higher than boiler pressure which is done by a pump and u know that we can easy compress a colder fluid as compare to hotter one.....

TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY,IF YOU SEE THE RENKINE CYCLE YOU CAN
UNDERSTAND THAT BY USING CONDENSOR YOU ARE INCRESING
EXPANSION AND IT WILL INCREASE EFFICIENCY OF STEAM TURBINE

condenser is a heat exchanger used to absorb the heat
energy of saturated vapour coming out of turbine and
convert that into liquid.it is done with cooling tower.

pump is used for compressing liquid and compressor is used
for compressing gaseous that's why we can condensate so that
pump can easily compress the water and transfer it to boiler
... but one ques if we use compressor to compress steam
directly without the use of condenser instead of pump than
what will happened ?
