I can only answer about Allen-Bradley processors. The most
commonly used 'language' is ladder logic and it is, in my
opinion, the best one to use since it visualizes the states
of the conditions used in the programming. The second one
is function block programming. This bears a strong
resemblance to a schematic drawing, showing each command
like an integrated circuit and its inputs and outputs as
pins. Useful for such things as PID loops. The last of
the three is structured text. This is very much like BASIC
programming, utilizing single lines of code for testing
conditions and adjusting outputs based on those tests. It
is the most difficult to use since there is no way to see
the conditions of the inputs/outputs or the values of any
analog numbers used.
