generally on the roadside v hav 11kv line which is being
step down to 440v line to line....so any1 can tell me which
type of transformer they r using whether it is star to
delta,delta to star etc...???

high voltage side should be connected in delta ,while low
voltage side in star because in star connecton,a ground or
neutral can be fecilitated

Answer / kranthi
IT MUST BE DELTA STAR..i.e.,on the meter side they require
415/1.732 V voltage with neutral point

see in delta minmum potential difference is 440. but in
star 440 as well as 230 is available. focusing in consumer
side the distribution transformer will have delta in
primary and star in secondary.

The transformer is Delta - Star connected Transformer i.e.,
11kv is given to Delta connected side and 440v is given to
Star connected side of the transformer.
Delta side dont have neutral, while transmission neutral is
not needed.if neutral is used totally 4 wires have to be
used otherwise 3 wires are enough. 440v side we give to
homes, there a neutral is need so connected in star.
in Delta side line voltage = phase voltage. so 11kv voltage
is same.
homes need the voltage of 230v, in star the line voltage is
not equal to phase voltage. line voltage is 440v and phase
voltage is 230v.
so the transformer needed is Delta-Star

While in Star connection we can reduce the line voltage by
57.7% due to the fact that we get the line voltage as 1/sqrt3
of the phase voltage ,hence reduction becomes easier and
convenient too. while in delta we get the line voltage=
phase voltage.

11 kv side delta connection and 440 v side star connection
bcos delta have no nutral so no need to run 4 runs of cable
need only 3 runs. in 440 v side we need nutral so it
connected in star connection.

Answer / arsenal
i think delta is used in the lv side bcoz in star
connection the voltage phase value will be greatly reduced
as such current is greatly increased so a large conductor
has to be used for transmission which increases the cost
and other losses.

generally it will be 1.1 kv/0.415kv step down star -delta
transformer.
