Inverter converts a DC voltage into an AC.
It is a part of a UPS system. A ups is a stand by power

WITH IN THE UPS INVERTER AND RECTIFIER WIL BE THERE.THE AC POWER ENTERED IN TO THE UPS WIL CONVERT IN TO DC BY RECTIFIERS.THE DC POWER IS STORED IN BATTERIES WHICH IS IN PARALLEL.THE DC POWER CONVERTS IN TO AC BY USING INVERTERS.WEN THE POWER SUPPLY INPUT IS OFF ,THEN THE BATTERIS WIL PROVIED SUPPLY TO THE SYSTEM.

I totally agree with the first anser also. but what I would
like to mention some UPS systems have two back up supple.
The first back up is throw the battaries while they are all
time buck-boost charging. when the power cuts up the it
will feed the load for some time. The secound back up will
be the stand by generator. this is used so no searise
losses of money because the battaries can feed from 15-30
min.
