We provide earthing to restrict the fault current since the
earth is considered to be as zero potential .
We also protect man and machine from the hazardous current
flowing from the equipment in case of any fault.

It is nothing but a protection for the personnel and the
costly equipment. In case of any falut in the system a
large amount of current flows through the equipment which
may damage the costly windings of the motors or
transformers, and can also be dangerous for the personnel
at sight so earthing will divert the large current to the
earth thus protecting the equipment and the personnel.

There are three major Factors that influences good earthing:
1) Earthing is mainly done to arrest the flow of jumping
electrons from the body to the ground because the ground
potential is zero.
2) Mainly body earthing of the equipment has to be done to
avoid the damage and losses of machine & humans.
3) Good earthing resistance is 1-2 ohms.ELCB ie,Earth
Leakage Circuit Breaker has to be placed in the Panel
boards for the safety purposes.

The earth connection improves service continuity and avoids
damage to equipment and danger to human life.
The object of an earthing system is to provide as nearly as
possible a surface under and around a station a uniform
potential and as nearly zero or absolute earth potential as
possible. In general, all parts of apparatus other than live
parts, shall be at earth potential which is always at a zero
potential.

If any HVDC line is going with positive & negative(the negative usually have return path of current with earthing electrode). Now the question is if this HVDC earthed electrode which is using as return path and earthed any nearby 400kv or 220kv AC substation equipments. which will be the impact of this on AC substation & its equipment, how severe may be this and what should be the minimum distance require between HVDC earthed electrode and AC substation equipments? It's really an high engineering level question...Dare to answer and increase your knowledge.
