It is nothing but a protection for the personnel and the
costly equipment. In case of any falut in the system a
large amount of current flows through the equipment which
may damage the costly windings of the motors or
transformers, and can also be dangerous for the personnel
at sight so earthing will divert the large current to the
earth thus protecting the equipment and the personnel.

Sp = RT( I x I x t) / K Where Sp – is the cross sectional area of bus bar in millimeters. I - is the value of AC fault current. t - is the operating time of disconnecting device in seconds. K – is the factor depending on the material of the conductor, insulation and initial and final temperature. Value of ‘k’ for copper is 143.
