Armature reaction for a dc generator:
Consists of 2 cases:1. when generator is operated without
load and 2. when generator is operated on load.
When generator is operated on no load only main flux(due to
poles) is produced. Now when load is applied, flux cuts
through the air gap and produces a counter flux due to
presence of armature. This flux caused by the presence of
armature distorts the main field flux, hence shifting the
magnetic neutral axis in the direction of rotation of the
generator. This causes heat loss. For a motor, the direction
of shifting of Magnetic Neutral axis is oposite to the
direction of rotation.
Since this loss occurs due to action of armature, it is
known as armature reaction.

reaction between armature flux and main field flux
main flux will be weak(less) with armature reaction which
is responsible for low efficiency.

Answer / tushar gawas
The effect of armature flux on main flux is called as
armature reaction.the armature flux cuts the main flux
hence an E.M.F is indunced in armature conductor which
causes rotation of motor.

well armauture reaction is the effect of armature flux on
the main field flux , the effect of armature reaction in a
dc machine is cross magnetising that is to distort the main
field flux and if the effect of saturation is taken into
account then it leads to demagnetisation as well. in case
of a dc motor the armature flux the flux at the leading
pole tips are weakened while it is strenghtened at the
trailing pole tips .

The current flow through the armature conductor, the
armature produced flux. This armature flux oppose the main
field flux (supply flux).so main field flux is reduce. THis
effect is called armature reaction.

armature reaction is the reaction which is the effect of the
magnetic filled set up by armature current on the
distribution of flux under main poles of a generator.

Answer / sumantkumar
It is the effect produced by armature flux upon the distribution of the flux under the main pole is called as armature reaction.
OR
The effect of armature flux on main flux is called as armature reaction

Answer / akhil
armature reaction is the effect of armature flux on main flux.all current carrying conductors produces magnetic field.the magnetic field produced by the current in the armature affect the flux pattern and distort the main flux and distortion causes a shift in the neutral plane. it will affect commutation
