isolator is used to isolate the circuit permanently after a
fault.circuit breaker is used to disconnect the circuit
temporarily. that is the main difference between an isolator
and CB.

Isolator is used to break the circuit under off-load where
as on-load circuit breaking is done by Circuit Breaker .
It is operated after the circuit breaker to completely
isolate the circuit.

THE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ISOLATOR AND CIRCUIT BREAKER IS.
ISOLATOR IS A OFF LOAD DEVICE. ISOLATOR CAN ONLY BE CONNECT
OR DISCONNECT AT NO LOAD(CURRENT)
CIRCUIT BREAKER IS A ON LOAD DEVICE.it can be open or close
in the loaded condition

>Isolator is used to break the 3 phase power ckt. under no
load condition ( mostly in substation ) installed before
and after the transformer for maintenance purpose.
>its operate only on no load condition because there is no
protection insite isolator.
>isolators are manually operated or motorised.

In power systems an isolator is a switch which is used to
completely open a circuit which has been rendered dead by
means of opening a circuit breaker for maintenance of
equipment. It can be visually seen that an isolator is open
and hence service men are assured that it is safe to work
on the isolated equipment. The equipment to be worked on is
further earthed mostly on either side so that electrical
energy that could be in the equipment is completely
discharged to earth further enhancing safety of the service
men. An isolator is also used for sectionalising power
lines during fault location. An isolator, unlike an auto
disconnector is not used to break load or close a loaded
circuit. An auto disconnector opens and closes a circuit
with limited load. Isolators are used at homes to isolalate
appliances with circuit breakers that are out of sight of
the service men in charge of repairing the appliances.
These isolators are therefore installed near the
appliances such as air conditioners.

isolators are operated at off load condition ... firstly
circuit breaker breaks the circuit .....
if isolated is operated at on load then flash or sparking
takes place due heavy voltages which shows hazardous effects...
so is use to minimize the sparking effect.... we can say
thay it is a slow switch and cb is the fast one ;-)

disconnector or isolator switch is used to make sure that an
electrical circuit can be completely de-energized for
service or maintenance. Such switches are often found in
electrical distribution and industrial applications where
machinery must have its source of driving power removed for
adjustment or repair. High-voltage isolation switches are
used in electrical substations to allow isolation of
apparatus such as circuit breakers and transformers, and
transmission lines, for maintenance. Isolating switches are
commonly fitted to domestic extractor fans when used in
bathrooms in the UK. Often the isolation switch is not
intended for normal control of the circuit and is only used
for isolation.

Isolator disconnects the circuit manually whenever abnormal conditions arise while circuit breakes breaks the circuits automatically in abnormal conditions. :)

1. Isolator are devices they are auto-operated or manually
in off load condition, mainly for maintenance purpose of a
faulty line. Circuit breakers trip during fault or heavy
current flow in the transmission line.
2. isolator physically isolates line and it ensures the
service man his personal safety unlike CB as it is not much
transparent in its condition.
3.Isolators are always opened in no load condition(after
opening of CB) because it lacks the mechanism of operating
in high voltage.
