Answer / moody
of course
for induction motor as example if its mechanical speed
exceeded its synchro speed so the power will be given to
the supply " negative" slip is negative
and this region on the T-NS curve is called generating
region
where slip s= ns-n/ns

ofcourse...
constructionally nodifference between generator and
motor.... the same machine can be used interchangable as a
generator or as a motor... motor operates on the principle
that when a current carrying conductor is placed in a
magnetic field a mechanical force experiences on it.. a dc
machine can work as a dc generator when it is driven by a
prime mover and is working on the principle that when a
conductor is moving in a magnrtic field an emf is generated
in it

Answer / vilas
any motor can work as a Generator the construction is
same, but the excitation to be given to the field winding to
generate power, otherwise it can not produce power without
excitation ,as a basic principle that a conductor placed in
the magnet field ,an e.m.f. induces in the conductor
(winding).

vilas is right, if you want to run an induction motor to
run as generator than you have to give its rotor some
excitation as without excitation no voltage or no power will
produce

yes , ac motor can be used as alternator. only we have to
rotate shaft by any mechanical force.

Moter is a device/machine which converts electrical energy into mechnical energy and the generator do the reverse of moter. synchronous motor is ac moter having rotor speed less than synchronous speed (Ns=120f/p). If the speed of the rotor exceeds the synchronous speed or the speed of the rotating emf of stator(Ns=120f/p) then the moter will act as a generator because in this condition the torque acts in opposite direction of rotation (as in generator).

I think moody is right...
Also when there is a short circuit happens in the network
to motor... the power to motor disconnects but still the
motor will run due to its Inertia.. during this time the
motor will work as a generator and will supply power to the
short circuiting point, will increase the KA level at the
point of short circuit . This will happen to all motors
connected in the network...
am i right ....

Answer / karthik_elec
in self exciter dc motors we can use as an generator, but in ac machines, squirrel cage induction motor we cant use as an generator because rotor winding is already shorted, in slip ring induction motor we can use but we need exiter, but in this case we cant get proper voltage and frequency ,because the construction of rotor winding is like that, synchronous motor construction already same like a alternator.

YES IM IS ACT AS A INDUCTION GENERATOR WHEN IT RUNS AT MORE
THAN A SYNCHRONOUS SPEED AT SUCH A CONDITION IT WILL GIVE
REACTIVE POWER TO AVOID THESE PROBLEM DRIVES WITH BREAKING
RESISTORS ARE USED.
