In case we correct the existing P.F. in case of DG set by
putting capacitor panel across DG set, then there is no
harm until the cicuit draws inductive or lagging P.F. . But
in case it starts drawing leading P.F. due to addition of
excessive capacitors across D.G. set then the output
terminal voltage would be higher than the induced voltage.
so it is not desirable to operate cap. panel across DG set.

Offcourse, p.f is the property of load. In a DG set, prime
mover supply mechanical BHP to the alternator, and it does
not depends on the load characterestics, but depends on the
load current.
in short, an alternator demands higher input torque/power
from the prime mover, as soon as current increases from
alternator.

Yes, we can put capacitors across DG load but it should have a controller ie capacitors should switch on automatically to maintain PF around 0.96 and manual operation of capacitors are not advisable .

We maintain the P.F. of DG Set approx 0.95 by two methods :-
1.By decreasing the voltage
2.By using power capacitor

Advantage is that for higher PF load current will be low to
deliver the same KW/MW from DG Set.

Power Factor is the property of load. Generator is a source
of power. So it can not be corrected thru generator. However
Synchronous generators can regulate power factor by
adjusting it's excitation current.
