Why the generator rating in kva

Answer / yajnesh
The rating of generator is described in terms of KVA by the
manufacturer because he does not know the nature of load,
that the consumer will put on it.
While in case of motor, motor have fixed power factor

bcz the output in kw. is dependent on p.f. and kva o/p.
independent of p.f.for example asingle phase alternator
drawing 50 amp atunity p.f. at 230v has an o/p. of
(50*230)=11.5kw at unity p.f: (50*230*0.6)=9.6kw.at
0.8 p.f.and (50*230*0.6)=9.6kwat 0.6 p.f. but the kva
rating of alternator is (230*50)=11.5kva.

As generator may be connected to any type of load(Inductive,Capacitive) therefore primarily it is independent of power factor,so we rating of generator which produces voltage and currents(v*i) is rated in kva, as motors have specific load nature (mostly inductive having specific power factor) are rated in kw

Answer / vishnu
in transformer, two type of losses present 1. copper losses ans 2. core losses
copper losses(I*I*R) depend upon current I(amp)
and core losses ((v*v)/R) depend upon voltage (volt)
so as a result the rating of transformer is KVA.....

Generator is producer of Voltage and Current, we can
connect load as such draining full load current or half
load, even noload, but voltage remain moreover same.So it
willl rated in terms of product of V*I, secondly it gives a
electrical output for any Load(may Capacitor,Inductor &
resistor),so it is consider as Procuct of Voltage & Current
excluding powerfactor.
Whereas motor is machines coverts electrical Energy to
Mechanical energy, so it is rated

generator delivers the power ,it includes only voltage& current simply.but motor gail the power and it gives the mechanical energy,it includes the power losses also.thats why motor rating in KW.and generator rating in KVA.

Generator is the equipment where the voltage & current starts their journey SIMULTANEOUSLY. Hence no question of Power Factor coming in. Hence it is termed in KVA(V*I)
But Motor is the destination any power generated , after completing its journey thru an Impedance path , where the "Sync" between Voltage & Current is lost due to line impedance.
Hence the factor Power factor arises , due to displaced Voltage& current .Hence it is termed in KW (V*I*Cos phi)

We all know that Transformers are rated in kVA, Generator and Alternator rated in kVA as well. Designers do not know the actual consumer power factor while manufacturing transformers and generators i.e. the P.F (Power factor) of Transformer and Generator/Alternator depends on the nature of connected loads either resistive load, capacitive load, or inductive load as Motors. All these are the apparent power where the power factor is defendant of the connected load.

The power √3 VL IL Cos φ delivered by the alternator for the same value of current, depends upon p.f. (Power Factor=Cos φ) of the load. But the alternator conductors are calculated for a definite current and the insulation at magnetic system are designed for a definite voltage independent of p.f. (Cos φ) of the load. For this reason apparent power measured in kVA is regarded as the rated power of the alternator.
Why alternator rated in kVA.
