What is meant by Active and reactive power?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
Active power means the power required for the heating and
rotating machines.
Reactive power means power required for building electric
and magnetic field.
kVA is apparent power(S), it consist of reactive power (Q
in var volt ampere reactive)))(for building electric and
magnetic fields) and active (P in W watts))(working power-
for heating, rotating machines, etc ) it is also thru that
S² = P² + Q².

Active Power is the one which is utilised by the inductive
loads to produce useful torque and work. Reactive power is
the one which is being used to magnetise the Inductive load
and once its job over it will return back to the source. In
this occasion only harmonics are produced with fundamental
sine waves. and there is no useful work done by this
magnetising current so to make use of this wastefull
current we introduce the static capacitors near the
Inductive loads to produce leading reactive power. To
compansate this reactive power one should supply the active
power to equal amount of reactive power to the system.

Reactive power is utilised in inductive or capacitiance
ciruits but does not produce real work. It is expressed as
Q and is given by
P=VIcos phie
Active power:
The time rate of energy per second is power. Basic unit of
power is watt power for one second requires 1 joule energy
practical unit is kw and 1kw=1000watt

we generally classify losses as resistive and reactive losses
1.we know resistance of a material is its characteristic which indicates how efficiently a material can conduct electrons
->there fore now we can say a certain portion of energy has to be spent to over come this resistance hence called resistive loss.
now any electric equipment we use will just convert electric energy to required form say mechanical in case of motor, heat in case of heater etc.,
now if the equipment used involves in reactive components say inductance or capacitance
we know a magnetic field will build up around a conductor carrying electricity
similar to resistance in case of electricity we have term magnetic permiability which indicates how efficiently a medium can carry magnetic field
now for building up of magnetic field around a conductor certain amount of power should be spent to over come magnetic resistance of medium mostly air..
-->now active power is the sum power which is used to produce real work and power consumed for resistive losses
-->and reactive power is power which is used to set up the magnetic field, electric field that power required for compensating magnetic losses which are predominant in inductive load........
