In a certain company 20% of the men and 40% of the women
attended the annual company picnic.If 35% of all the
employees are men . What % of all the employee went to the
picnic?

Let 'A' & 'a' be the total no. of men & the men went to
picnic respectively.
And let 'B' & 'b' be the total no. of women & the women
went to the picnic respectively.
Total no. of employees = A+B
20% of total men = a
or 20/100* A = a
or A/5 = a ............................(1)
40% of total women = b
or 40/100*B = b
or 2B/5 = b .................................(2)
As Given : 35% of (A+B) = A
35/100* (A+B) = A
7/20* (A+B) = A
7A+7B = 20A
7B = 13A ........................(3)
Now from (1) & (2) :-
total no of employee went to the picnic = (a + b)
= (A/5 + 2B/5)
percentage of employee went to the picnic :
= (A/5+2B/5) / (A+B) * 100
= (7B/65 + 2B/5) /(7B/13+B)*100
= (33B/65) / (20B/13)*100
= 33% ans.

[a]if 35% are men then 20% of men went for picnic so the
rest men in company is 15%
and [B] if 35% are men the remaining is 65% women and 40%
women went picnic so the remaining women is 15%
so 70% of employees went to picnic and the rest 30%
remained in company.
