Surge current is the faulty current produced due to some short circuit and is capable of burning the equipment so earthing is used to provide it a low resistant path for grounding.
Surge current means an instantaneous current of very high amplitude.
Surge voltage would be in case of open circuit condition.

Why we apply only reduced voltage to the alternator while conducting slip test ? also the current increases to a larger value with reduced voltage itself Why ?
