Infrared or ultraviolet(IR/UV) energy is emitted from a heated filament in a chamber.when gas is passed through it,a detector measures IR/UV wavelength absorption by the gas which is the property of that gas.this is compared to the reference condition i.e at no absorption.radiation spectrum is limeited to absorption band of gas.
