how can we minimize the off load losses of a distribution
transformer which is required to be energized 24x7 ??
capacity of the T/F is 1250 KVA and off load losses are
around 2.0 KW.. can we use capacitor bank at the secondary
of such a T/F to overcome off load losses? please elaborate
briefly...thanks

Distribution transformers are to be charged 24x7 as they
have to supply to the consumers. These transformers are
loaded in a day ( 24 hrs) with different loads, i.e more
load during peak hours and light loads during off peak
hours. Whatever the load or no load on this trf the off
load losses will be present in the trfs and cant be
avoided. The capacitors connecting sec. will not help in
any way and that will be used only for the pf improvement.
Hence this trf efficency will be calculated as ALL-DAY
EFFCICIENCY... For more the the effciency the trf should be
loaded to its rating(100%). The noload (offload) losses
cant be supressed in the transformers as this is part of
the loss occurred to magntize the core.
