for protection purpose
in faulty condition...

Isolators-An isolators is switch which is used for
isolating a circuit under no load condition only.It is
switched OFF when a high current is flow through the
circuit and heavy spark will be produce.

circuit breaker operates under faulty conditions only....
where as isolator is operate under no-load
condition..i.e,when a fault occurs on a power system ckt
breaker operates and opens the terminals afterwards isolator
is used to isolate the faulty phase from the operation

the above last two answers are exactly correct, but now a
days we have interlock between braker and isolator also.
isolator opens only when braker is opned. also we have earth
switch attached to issolator to discharge induction voltage
in circuit also enable protection under maintanance.

isolator means its leakage current is less than 2mA when it
is isolated,where circuit breaker is has leakage current
more than 2mA which is not safe for the person working when
it breaker is in off condition.
